ho scale acela problem

The Acela locos are set up to allow you to run with live cantanary, or two rail power, and have a switch to select powersource.
The first thing I would do is check that it is set for rail power.
Did you buy the Acela Express loco set, or the HPP-8 double ended loco.
The express set has one powered and one dummy in the set.
IIRC, the Express requires removal of the shell to access switch, but the HPP-8 switch is under a cover on the roof.
