4-8-4 Niagara #6005

We just purchased a Bachmann Niagara 4-8-4 #6005 Item #11305.  There was no instruction manual and we cannot find it on Bachmann's website.  We have been unable to get it to smoke.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Take a flashlight and look down the smoke stack and see if you have a white plastic cup with metal tube in the center. If you do you have a smoke unit.
Add about 6-8 drops of smoke fluid but don't over fill.
You won't get much smoke until you run the train for about 5-10 min. so the unit can heat up. As the train runs faster you will get more smoke.
The Bachmann smoke units don't work all that well. Don't expect a lot.
If you still get no smoke you will have to take apart the engine to repair it or send it in to Bachmann under warranty to be fixed. Is the smoke all that important??

The loco you purchased was from the Bachmann Plus line which does not exist, your particular item number corresponds to a loco that came with horn hook couplers and not knuckle couplers. This would date it from originally being manufactured before 1992, likely making it about 20 years old. The parts diagram for the Plus version is not online, but the DCC version is online; however, if you bought the loco as "new" then it should have all the papers included not limited to an exploded parts diagram and outdated warranty information. If you bought this from someplace other than you local hobby shop then it is likely not new by Bachmann's standards. No authorized retailers are selling this locomotive online eliminating that possibility. You can call Bachmann's Service Department, Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm, and Friday 8 am to 12 pm (All Times Eastern).   They can be reached toll free by US and Canadian customers at 800-356-3910. You can purchase a replacement smoke unit for your loco, but either you or someone at your local hobby shop would have to replace it. Or you can send in your loco for service, but you have to pay for postage and a service fee.
For items more than one year old, there is a nominal service charge for repair or replacement (prices subject to change):
$25.00 -   Standard DCC and Spectrum N and HO
$40-50.00 -   DCC Upgrade fee

send it in to Bachmann under warranty to be fixed.

If you look in the Walthers catalog, this loco is from before 1992 and it came standard with horn hook/ xf2 couplers, the only way this could be under warranty would be if his LHS was selling it as new old stock and had it for 20 years.
