You're talking about the DC locomotives right? If so, they tend to motors tend to make a lot of noise when running on DCC as opposed to DC. You can slap a Bachmann HO decoder in your Acela loco, but it really does not make that much of a difference unless you are looking for a decoder with bemf or sound.

what is bemf and the locos are dcc on board

BEMF helps prevent trains from slowing down when going up a grade and from speeding up when going down grade. Sometimes locos stop when trying to roll slowly across a turnout or other rough trackage. Back ElectroMotive Force is the voltage generated by the spinning motor. BEMF is proportional to motor speed and independent of motor load. The decoder can measure the electric motor's speed , and apply power accordingly to keep the motor's speed constant. The result can be a train that will maintain the same speed regardless of the grade, number of cars being pulled, or condition of the track.

If your locos with DCC are Bachmann standard line GP-30s, GP-35s, or GP-40s then it is normal. Quieter running and spectrum locos seem to go together.

the dcc locos are spectrum 2-8-0 and standard 2-8-4, both are Bachmann but I will get the decoder off ebay this week for the Acela and also add to the track as soon as I get more plywood
