Your fine locomotives have the abillity to shut windows, well, how'a'bout the cabs on the engine have the abillity to also open the doors, and roof vent. The cabs that you can buy from other makers have the function to but the cabs are made of wood. I personally like the Baldwin steel cabs, and would like to open the doors, and vents.

please forgive my poor typing earlyer, i was in a hurry.

Thanks

I'm just going to bump this topic up to let you know the advantages of having operational vents and doors.

1.) Depending on the area you are modeling, such as the South East, such as me, the Summer time gets really hot on a mastodon type locomotive such as bachamanns On30 engines, thus the need of cool air and ventilation is needed.

2.) An easier way to paint your doors, with out all the hassle.

See what a great option this would be.

Dusten, I think it would bump up the cost of a locomotive . I have opened the doors on my Bachmann mogul by the careful use of my xacto.

Would you know how to open a steel cab door?
Thanks

Dusten, the first thing you need to do is study prototype photos of the railroad engines you are modeling. Since I don't do eastern then I can't help you much in that area. I can tell you that most railroad engineers just had the doors removed prior to leaving the yard, this was very common on the C&S and yes it gets hot in those cabs!
I remember reading from Mel McFarland book "Cripple Creek Road" where a engineer got tired of the open door swinging back and forth got frustrated and took a tool and broke the glass out.

I scored the lines outlining the door with an X-acto blade very carefully and continued the scoring until the door is opened. the color that I match with the Bachmann black is Krylon satin black .can't help you if you are looking for operating doors or the Tweetsie green.

I understand full well how to open the doors on the 2-6-0, I have forgotten that, that cab was steel.  :D

What I am asking is on the bachmann models of the 2-8-0 and the 4-6-0; how to open their doors on the die cast steel cabs. Unless you mean the same way with th plastic cab. ;D

Hey Dusten, I am sorry I forgot those cabs are diecast. I am afraid that is little more surgey than I want to do. I would do a lot of practice with a dremel before that surgery.

Why not use your dremel to open the doorway and if too much is destroyed then build another door from styrene. the most difficult part would be matching up the green paint. thats what this scale is all about...details!..operating markers and opened doors and full cab interior.

Don't forget about woodgrain as well.  ;D I don't think all my future ten wheelers will be green. I am planning on pretending that#14 is on lease from the ET&WNC, during WWII instead of being shipped to alaska.

My locomotives paint schemes are still being thoght up. I am running on the B&S RR "Barefoot & Southern"; a brewing railroad. The railroad is owned by a distlling company, and ships brandy out in reefer cars, ethanol in silver tankers, and general goods. The line ties into a SG interchange to get the brew onto the mainlines of the US.
