rolling stock for Jupiter?

My son has the Bachmann HO  Jupiter with tender.  What rolling stock would you recommend that would be historically appropriate for the engine?

As an extension to the question, how might I go about researching an answer to a question like this?  It would be helpful to have links to potential accessories, etc. that might "fit" a particular train.

a few resources with many links. A little home work will be needed. some vary from about 1860 to maybe 1915. the jupiter is about circa 1870 or so.

MDC/Roundhouse makes a lot of old-time cars.

Ek... - Any of the older Bachmann old time cars would be fine. These can sometimes be found at model railroad train shows. I should warn you that they usually have the old style X2F hook/horn couplers.

Snoop around the Roundhouse trains website at http://www.roundhousetrains.com/ and take a good look at their old time train line. In the past many of these cars were offered as kits. Sadly, all Roundhouse offers are RTR [Ready To Run]. I guess I should say that the Roundhouse cars are really examples of post turn of the 20th century cars; but they will do as stand-ins. As ABC has said they made a lot of cars in this genre.

Mantua is another company that has a line of old time cars that generally predate the Roundhouse offerings. Again, older examples of Mantua cars will have the X2F non-magnetic couplers.

There are other kit manufacturers, such as B.T.S. and Labelle, that offer craftsman kits. I wouldn't think these would suit your needs as they are quite pricey and very fragile (being constructed of wood).

Keep in mind that there wasn't a great variety of car types in the 1870s - 1890s. Box cars, tank (literally) cars, reefers, ventilated box cars, horse cars, gondolas (which were actually modified flat cars) stock cars, and flat cars made up the bulk of rail traffic. The big difference, between then and now, was the bewildering array of railroads. You may have a limited variety of car types...but the number of railroads that had those types was amazing!

model power has the mantua old time line with knuckle couplers. no more of the old x2f couplers unless you find the older mantua on ebay or tag sales.

roundhouse still has old time kits, 36 foot truss rod, at the below site but I doubt you want to build kits.
i have bought from that site. no passenger cars though.

the overton 34' car is nice but are pretty much out of stock some places.
