 After doing some searching for information about this beast, I found that there only 2 left ( at a Chicago coke plant, still in use ) out of the over 70 made. They were pretty big, 12 stories high and they came in at a svelte 870 tons. The operator sat right above the 175 ton capacity bucket, and must have had a lot of ups and downs.

Most of the iron ore boats were converted to self unloaders.
That made the hewletts obsolete.

there are still a number of classic lakers left and still active,,almost all of the new boats have the same boring lines and looks of salties.

I live in conneaut ohio and there were 4 of them one block from my house. Use to fall asleep with the sound of them working on ore carriers all night long. The record for fastest unloading of a ore boat was made in conneaut, which of course will stand now forever.
