does one have to have the ez command station to get the walk around version or can one just have the walk around version to start

The Walkaround Companion has no Command Station capabilities.  It is basically a throttle.  So no, you cannot use it by itself.  For more information, see this link:

Yeah like Jim said, the walk-around companion must plug into the the E-Z command station or else you'll be wondering why your loco is just sitting there when you turn it to full throttle.
